Local10/12/2007Hoons burned by their stuntsBy BRAD WORRALLTWO alcohol-affected drivers who did burnouts in front of police in Albury at the weekend had their cars confiscated. One driver was almost four times the legal blood-alcohol limit when tested at the city’s police station. The Albury man, 35, was also a disqualified driver. The other sparked a police pursuit in the early hours of Saturday morning, switching off his lights in a bid to evade officers before crashing into a fence a short distance away. Barring appeals the confiscated cars will be held for three months. Albury highway patrol Sgt Dean Miller was still shaking his head in disbelief yesterday. “About 2am on Saturday an Albury man, 20, did a burnout in front of police in North Street,” he said. “He has then switched off his lights and tried to get away but he stacked his car into a fence in Bellevue Street, North Albury. “He blew 0.10 when tested at the station a short time later.” Sgt Miller said a highway patrol car was on the scene when a red Holden utility, driven by the 35-year-old, did a burnout on Saturday night. “About 7.30pm the officers observed the car doing a burnout in Griffith Road,” he said. “The driver returned a positive breath test and recorded 0.18 when he was brought back to the station.” Sgt Miller said he was charged with the burnout, having high range prescribed concentration of alcohol and being a disqualified driver. “Both vehicles were confiscated for three months, if they re-offend, whatever car they are driving at the time will become the property of the courts,” he said Meanwhile, a P-plater paid for her inattention to the road yesterday by ploughing through several trees in Mate Street. The 17-year-old’s light blue Corona sedan drifted onto the nature strip about 9am flattening two trees before coming to rest against another tree trunk. Sgt Miller said it was simply a bit of inattention. “It certainly hasn’t been speed and nor was alcohol involved,’ he said. “She has veered off the road and looked up in time to see the car headed toward the trees.” |
