Police dog stabbed to death chasing teen

A TEENAGER has been charged with killing a police dog stabbed on the NSW South Coast early yesterday.

The German shepherd, named Carts after a constable who was murdered in 1997, was stabbed several times while on a call-out to a surf club at Corrimal at about 3am.

Police had arrived to find two people with a motorcycle allegedly stolen from the club.

They abandoned the bike before running off, police said.

One stopped when told to by police, but Carts pursued the other man into nearby bushes, where the dog was allegedly stabbed.

The seven-year-old dog, which joined the force in 2002, later died of injuries in a veterinary hospital.

An 18-year-old Balgownie man was charged with aggravated breaking and entering and taking a conveyance without the consent of its owner.

He was later charged with killing or seriously injuring an animal used for law enforcement and with using a weapon to resist arrest.

He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court today.

An 18-year-old Strathfield man has been charged with aggravated breaking and entering and taking a conveyance without the consent of its owner.

He has been granted conditional bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on January 16.
