National10/12/2007Fiery car smash claims 4FOUR people were incinerated in a fiery crash beside Melbourne’s West Gate Freeway last night, police say. The white Holden Commodore ran off the freeway and hit a tree, bursting into flames on impact at between Williamstown and Millers roads in Altona North, about 6.45pm. Victoria Police spokeswoman Senior Constable Cassy Stone said emergency crews at the scene confirmed four people died in the accident. The 1990s model Commodore, appeared to have spun backwards off the outbound lanes of the freeway. It struck a cypress tree in the middle of the driver’s side, bending the car around the trunk. With the four occupants inside, the car ignited. Police were counselling a traumatised witness at the side of the road. Major collision investigation unit members were at the scene. |
